Eight months in prison for residents of an apartment building in Thessaloniki for a barred door that crushed a 4-year-old girl

The child’s mother described in court the shocking moments she experienced when, accompanying her two minor children, she saw the heavy iron door, weighing 150 kilograms, crushing one of them.

An eight-month “bell”, suspended, was imposed by a court on two tenants-owners of apartments who were considered responsible for the injury of a 4-year-old girl, after a gate fell, in May 2020, in Kordelio, Thessaloniki.

The Single-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki found them guilty of negligent bodily harm, as they were the exclusive users of this door which led to a parking space and in which – as it turned out – there was damage to its wheel, as a result of which it did not roll on the railway.

The child’s mother described in court the shocking moments she experienced when, accompanying her two minor children, she saw the heavy iron door, weighing 150 kilograms, crushing one of them.

“She was saved by a miracle,” she testified as a witness, pointing out that her 4-year-old daughter had to undergo surgery on her eye, but the problem has not been fully restored to date.

And as if that wasn’t enough, she was later faced with derogatory characterizations from her neighbor, on the occasion of the specific incident, as she herself testified in court.

In addition to the two convicted occupants (they did not appear in court and were represented by a lawyer), the owner of the parking space who lives permanently in Germany and the particular neighbor were also brought to trial, with the former acquitted and the latter sentenced to 3 months imprisonment (suspended) for insult.
