The 67-year-old fisherman was calling for help for an hour when at some point his voices were heard by Bulgarians working nearby.

A professional fisherman had a bad adventure on the morning of Friday, February 3 in Thassos when he suddenly found himself in the sea, entangled in his own nets. The incident occurred shortly after 09:00 in the morning in the sea area of Pachy, near Pefkospilia.

The 67-year-old fisherman had started fishing in a familiar spot, with his small boat. Shortly after he spread his nets, he found himself under unknown circumstances in the sea, completely unable to move his legs. In his panic, however, he caught up and held onto his boat with his hands, so that his head stayed out of the water, reports KavalaNews.gr.

He was calling for help for a while when at some point his voices were heard by Bulgarians working nearby. Not knowing where to turn, they went out onto the main road, the Limena-Limenaria highway, and stopped a passing car.

They tried with broken Greek and little English to explain what was happening. The passing motorist went to the beach, realized that a man was about to drown and immediately called the Coast Guard. In the meantime, the fisherman’s son was also notified, who took a boat from the port of Skala Rachoniou and headed towards the spot.

After getting close enough to his father’s boat, he cut the nets to free him. Then another boat arrived, with his cousin (the fisherman’s nephew) who pulled the 67-year-old out of the water.

The fisherman is estimated to have been in the sea for an hour, hanging from his boat and unable to move his legs. There were fears that he may have suffered hypothermia.

While it took for help to arrive, those gathered on the shore tried to communicate with him and ask him questions so he wouldn’t lose consciousness. After he was brought ashore, he was given first aid and transported by ambulance to the Prinos Health Center for tests.

According to the latest information, he is in good health, he had symptoms of hypothermia but it was not deemed necessary to transport him to Kavala.
