The detailed prognosis from the EMY

Cold air masses from northern Europe will move further south and cause bad weather with the name BARBARA in our country from Sunday (02/05/2023). The main features will be the low temperatures, the strong frost, the local heavy snowfalls in areas of eastern Greece, as well as the stormy northerly winds of intensity 8 to 9 Beaufort on the seas.

The snowfall that will occur from Saturday night in the central and northern continental regions (mountains and semi-mountains), will extend and affect Sunday (05/02/2023):

1. From the early hours of the morning the islands of the northern Aegean, Halkidiki and Thrace. The phenomena from the midday hours in Halkidiki and Thrace will present a temporary recession.

2. From the midday hours, they will intensify and affect the Sporades, Thessaly (especially eastern Magnesia), Evia and eastern Sterea. Snowfall will also occur in lowland areas of Boeotia and Evia.

3. From the afternoon, snow will fall in the mountains, mainly in the northern Cyclades, as well as in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Crete, where the snowfall will be heavy at times.

B) On Monday (06/02/2023) at times heavy snowfall will continue to occur on the northern Aegean islands, Thrace, Sporades, Evia, eastern Sterea, the Cyclades and Crete.

C) Especially for Attica, snowfalls will occur from the early afternoon in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, while from noon they will intensify, mainly in the north and east and it will also snow in areas with a lower altitude. Snowfalls will show a temporary recession during the night, while on Monday they will continue but with lesser intensities.

D) On Tuesday (07/02/2023), snowfall is expected to continue in eastern Greece from Thessaly and further south (rainy areas) as well as in the Cyclades and Crete, but with less intensity.

Low temperatures

From Sunday (05/02/2023) a gradual drop in temperature from north to south is expected, of the order of 8 to 10 degrees. This will result in the prevalence of strong frost mainly in the continental areas, which will be total in places in the central and northern areas (negative temperatures throughout the day).

Stormy Winds

From Sunday (02/05/2023) at noon, stormy north-northeast winds of intensity 8 to 9 Beaufort will blow on the seas, which from Sunday afternoon in the Ionian and from Tuesday (02/07/2023) in the Aegean, gradually they will weaken.

Civil Protection recommendations for drivers and pedestrians

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be especially careful, ensuring that self-protection measures are taken against risks arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena.

In particular, in areas where snowfall and frost are predicted:

If they are going to travel by car:

-To be informed about the weather and the condition of the road network
– Have anti-skid chains on their vehicle and a full tank of fuel
-To travel, if necessary, preferably during the day preferring the main roads
-To inform their relatives about the route they are going to follow
-To change their travel schedule to avoid peak weather conditions
– To faithfully follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as Traffic, etc.

If moving on foot:

-Dress in several layers of light clothing instead of one heavy garment and wear appropriate shoes to avoid slippery injuries
-To avoid unnecessary movements during the peak of the phenomena (heavy snowfall, freezing conditions)

Also, in areas where heavy rainfall, storms or gale-force winds are expected to occur:

– To secure objects which, if carried away by severe weather conditions, may cause damage or injury.
-To make sure that the gutters and downspouts of the houses are not blocked and are working properly.
-Avoid crossing torrents and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainfall, but also for several hours after the end of their event
-Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
-Take shelter immediately during a hailstorm. Take shelter in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until they are sure the storm has passed. Hail can be very dangerous for animals too.
-Avoid passing under large trees, under posted signs and in general through areas where light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass, etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (e.g. under balconies ).
– To faithfully follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as Traffic, etc.
