The occupation of the Royal Theater took place at 18:00, one hour before the start of the performance by Drama School students

Drama School students in the city took over the Royal Theater in Thessaloniki, building of the State Theater of Northern Greece, as part of the actions and mobilizations they are carrying out for the withdrawal of Presidential Decree 85/2022. The occupation of the Royal Theater took place at 18:00, an hour before the start of the performance “Whoever wants to divorce, let him raise his hand” by Giorgos Kapoutzidis, which was cancelled.

“The state schools of the country are under occupation, the private schools are resorting to the state council, the teachers of the drama school of the National Theater say that if no decision is made by February 8 they will resign, risking losing the academic year. With the announcement of SEH, a massive 48-hour strike is taking place, with shows and filming being cancelled. The road to asserting the academic and professional rights of artists is open for the first time”, says a statement of the Coordination of Art Schools of Thessaloniki.

The “core” of the artists’ requests remains the maximization of their studies and in this context they note that they cannot consider the solution of the establishment of an inter-ministerial group, which will propose changes to upgrade the schools by March 31, to be satisfactory. “Potential elections just a week later remove any credibility of such a proposal,” the statement said.

They add that “we, as coordinator, answer that the attempt to silence art will not pass. We continue our struggle, together with the occupied schools of the National Theater, the DIPETHE of Patras and now also the KSOT. We do not and cannot move on promises and assignments to future governments. For all these reasons and as an escalation of our struggle against state indifference and the continuous degradation of culture, we are proceeding with the occupation of the Royal theatre. Solidarity in the occupation of the Chiller building”, it is emphasized. It is noted that the other scenes of the KTHBE (EMS, Lazarist Monastery) are operating normally.
