Volos: Heavy snowfall across Magnesia – Schools closed – Battle to keep roads open

by

At 6.30 in the morning the temperature was at zero in Volos, while in Chania of Pelion the thermometers showed -9 degrees

Fierce snowfall “sweeps” all of Magnesia and everything is covered by snow, both in the countryside and in the urban centers, while transportation is conducted with difficulty throughout the road network of the region.

In Volos, the snowfall from 02:30 in the morning is particularly heavy and traffic problems are already significant, as cars need anti-skid chains to move around the city, but also in many areas within the city. Visibility in Volos is also very limited due to the severity and density of the snowfall.

The height of the snow it has exceeded 10 cm even on the beach, while since the very intense snowfall the snow has exceeded 30 cm in districts above Periferiakos, which is constantly being cleared of snow but in some places such as the Goritsa tunnel, anti-skid chains are needed.

Throughout the night dozens of snow plows they are trying to keep the central axes of Volos open, while water carriers of the municipality of Volos, as well as private ones, are constantly moving and pouring sea water on the road surface. Car traffic is zero throughout the area, even in the center of Volos.

Urban transport in the capital of Magnesia, they do not run routes from the morning and maybe only those bus lines that serve the center of Volos will operate later, since to the suburbs, and especially to the north, it is difficult to move with only anti-skid chains.

They face the same problems long distance transport and the dozens of morning itineraries to various destinations and none to Pelion have not been carried out.

Schools of all levels both within Volos and regionally, as well as the University of Thessaly, will not operate today throughout the day. Schools in the municipalities of Zagora-Mouresi and South Pelion are also closed today by decision of the mayors.

At 6.30 in the morning the temperature was at zero in Volos, while in Chania of Pelion the thermometers showed minus 9 degrees.

The situation towards Pelion is very difficult, since it has been snowing non-stop since the night and the height of the snow has exceeded 40 cm in Chania. The road network is open since it is continuously cleaned by the 75 machines of the Regional Unit of Magnesia and the Region of Thessaly, but the use of anti-skid chains is essential throughout the road network of Pelion, and mainly from Ano Volos and above.

According to the deputy governor of Magnesia, Dorothea Kolyndrini, who spoke to APE-MPE, “the snowfall is very intense also on the coastal front and the machines are fighting to keep the roads open, especially the Volos-Kalon Neron-Argalasti road axis. The Volos exits to Larissa and Athens are constantly being cleared of snow, but there are already problems on the Athens-Thessaloniki highway in the areas of Almyros, Sourpi, Agios Theodoros and Pteleos, where there is a snowstorm and efforts are being made to keep the road open and don’t stop the traffic of cars”.
