World Day of the Greek Language – “The Greek language in its timeliness … the mixing of the world”

by

On the occasion of the day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created a video in which young men and women from 23 countries of the world who are taught the Greek language recite Greek poems

February 9, a day of remembrance for our national poet Dionysios Solomos, has been established since 2017 as World Greek Language Day. The actions and events that accompany the celebration aim to highlight the richness and timelessness of the Greek language, as well as the fundamental role it has played over the centuries through its universal contribution to European and, more broadly, world culture, according to a statement from the General Secretariat of Emigration Hellenism.

As part of this year’s celebration, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Katsaniotis, and the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created a short video, which runs through Greek poetic creation, from antiquity to the present day. Through the lyrics of great Greek authors, the all-human greatness of the Greek spirit and the Greek soul as a generative force and inexhaustible feeder of modern civilization is anthologized with simplicity and sensitivity, it is pointed out in the same announcement. In the video with the theme “The Greek language in its timeliness … the mixing of the world”, young men and women from 23 countries around the world who are taught the Greek language “travel” us through three millennia of Greek poetry.

The video will be posted on 9.2.2023 on the website and social media of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as foreign diplomatic authorities for the promotion of this year’s celebration of the International Day of the Greek Language. It will also be posted on the websites and social media of expatriate organizations, Chairs of Greek Studies at Universities, Greek Language Education bodies, Philhellenic Organizations and the media for the wider spread of the universal message of this particularly important Day for Hellenism.

As specified, the video is free to play as long as the source is mentioned.
