Tour guide publisher Lonely Planet is well known in the travel world as it has been producing books for decades.
It was founded in 1973, after Australians Tony and Maureen Wheeler backpacked from England to Australia. When the couple returned, several friends started asking for travel tips, which motivated the Wheelers to create the first tourist guide.
In December, the publisher usually publishes a list of the best destinations for the following year. At Best in Travel 2022, there are places for the traveler to “experience a wide range of breathtaking experiences, from hiking through Iceland’s fjords to seeing a rising Nigerian fashion show,” according to the Lonely Planet.
The editor recalls that the pandemic continues to impact the world and travel and that the list of destinations is “as much a wish list for the future as a list of visits now”.
There are 30 destinations, between countries, cities and regions, and only one location is in South America: the Atacama Desert, in Chile. The same situation occurred in the 2021 list, when MedellÃn, Colombia, was mentioned.
In the list released in December 2019, the Brazilian Amazon was among the 30 best destinations for 2020. Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay were other South American countries that appeared in the publication.
