Southeastern’s American Studies Programs: Preparing Tomorrow’s Engineers and Tomorrow’s Leaders in ‘Green Technologies’ to Address Climate Change

by

Climate Change is clearly the most significant threat the planet has ever experienced.

For the treatment of o US Climate Act (Inflation Reduction Act — IRA), amounting to $738 billion, will be a driving force for investments in cleaner energy with $391 billion subsidies to industry for the transition to the green economy.

To address this serious problem for Europe, the European Union is proceeding with the establishment of a European Green Sovereignty Fund which will finance its competitiveness with an amount similar to the US IRA and aimed at strengthening investments, research and education in the field of the green economy.

For transferswhich are responsible for 26% of GHG emissions renewable fuel industries will be boosted. The renewable fuels is mainly the hydrogenthe methanolthe ammonia , the biodiesel and biomethane, produced from biogas, after the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The recycling of CO2, produced by power plants of coal, cement, etc., with zero carbon footprint represents an important aspect of the proposed methanol economy which was nominated by the awardee with Nobel Prize in Chemistry G. Olah. Any available energy source (alternatives such as solar, wind, geothermal and nuclear) can be used to produce the hydrogen needed to convert CO2 into methanol, which is easily transportable.

It is obvious that a condition for development technology for generating electricity from coal and lignite with a zero carbon footprint and her methanol economyare investments in low-cost systems for capturing CO2 and converting CO2 into renewable fuels.

As he told us Dr. Nikolaos Kanellopoulos chief of research and technology at Southeastern and former president of the research center EKEFE Democritus, the development of different “green” technologies, is expected to lead to huge and entirely new employment opportunities, which will require different skills and training requirements. Millions of ‘green’ engineering jobs are expected to be created worldwide over the next two decades, driven by new climate policies and commitments. A typical example is America, where the “green jobs” by 237% over the past five years. Within this period of time, the need to retrain the engineers was observed at a rate of approximately 40%.

Identifying the skills required by the most promising “green technologies” of the hydrogen or methanol economy and the educational requirements is not straightforward. For that reason, the Southeastern, with his participation in a large number of European research centers and Universities that develop research activity in the field of green technology, prepares the more precise definition of the required modifications.

At Southeastern, students have the opportunity to become familiar with the development of “next generation” materials based on recent advances in nanotechnology, to address climate change and related laboratory exercises. For example, students practice in preparation of films of parallel oriented graphene oxide wafers and carbon nanotubes that can be used for efficient CO2 capture, but also for other environmental applications (Lithium recovery) and low-cost desalination.

Particular emphasis is placed on health applications (development of biosensors) and “new generation” systems in pharmaceutical technology applications (transdermal drug release, targeted drug delivery).

In addition, his laboratory activities Southeastern include the acquisition of experience in the application of prototype carbon nanotube electrodes for hydrogen production and in the use of “new generation” membranes (molecular sieving membranes) for the efficient removal of produced water, resulting in cost-effective hydrogenation of captured CO2 and its conversion to low-cost methanol. In this area in 2021, Air Liquide announced the development of a three-stage system for water removal, but the alternative membrane technology is expected to be 35% more efficient. In addition, this technology is considered vital for countries like Greece, as renewable hydrogen can be used to hydrogenate CO2 that will be captured from the waste gases of lignite plants into green methanol.

Over the past 40 years, Southeastern as an English-speaking Institution has pioneered the Engineering and Natural Sciences majors. Today, Southeastern is preparing tomorrow’s leaders who will handle the transition to the “methanol economy” and the hydrogen economy. Utilizing the progressive elements of the American Education system, Southeastern offers modernized traditional as well as innovative engineering majors.

FOR ALL SPECIALTIES, THE POSSIBILITY IS OFFERED FOR TRANSCRIPTION/METAKINHSH (Transfer) OR FOR PARALLEL STUDIES (Parallel Studies) ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN STUDIES RULES (Transfer of Academic Credits, Change of Concentration, Top-up Completion Studies).

All Southeastern programs are conducted in English and last 5 years. For students with deficiencies in English, an intensive English program is offered. For all majors, the option is offered for transfer or for parallel studies. It is worth emphasizing that students with excellent academic performance have the possibility to receive partial financial support in combination with their active participation in Southeastern’s research activities.

The career and internship office assists Southeastern students and graduates in finding jobs internationally (European Union, USA, Canada, Middle East), the same applies to internship programs in Greek or Multinational companies.
