The Japanese archipelago consists of over 6,800 islands, of which about 280 are inhabited; on some of them, known as neko-shima, or, “cat islands,” the proud quadrupeds far outnumber the intelligent bipeds. Fishing villages, such as Aoshima, the most famous of the dozen or so “cat islands”, brought in cats in the early 20th century to deal with rodents. The offspring of these cats have fascinated photographer Masayuki Oki for years.
Tirelessly, for eight years Oki has been documenting cats in his hometown of Tokyo and on islands across the country, focusing on the felines’ interactions with each other. Through an anthropomorphic photographic gaze, the photos humorously depict playful leaps and awkward entanglements of the quadrupeds.
