Six beaked whales were found dead today, while a pod of four was found on a beach yesterday
Whales washed up dead on the northern shores of Cyprus, the authorities announced today, in a phenomenon that possibly linked to the powerful earthquakes in neighboring Turkey and Syria.
Six beaked whales were found dead today, while a pod of four was found on a beach yesterday, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research announced.
Three of the four found on Thursday were taken back to the open sea, while the fourth died, the agency said in a statement. It was unclear whether the dead whales found today included those from the pod spotted yesterday that had returned to sea, the agency said.

“These animals have an echolocation system that is affected by the noises of the sea; it could be military gymnasiums, underwater drilling, or of course the earthquake that happened in the area,” Yannis Ioannou from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research told Sigma TV .
Authorities identified the whale as a minke whale. They are not often seen on the Cypriot coast.
Monday’s powerful earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, which have killed tens of thousands of people, were also felt on the eastern Mediterranean island.
