Travel document smuggling gang busted – 3 people arrested

Three foreigners, aged 38, 39 and 43, were arrested yesterday afternoon in an ELAS operation

In particular, three foreigners, aged 38, 39 and 43 years old, were arrested yesterday afternoon in an ELAS operation, as members of the gang and for the offenses of accepting and disposing of the proceeds of crime and possession and trafficking of third party travel documents of persons, from persons who have set up a gang with the intention of obtaining income.

According to ELAS, in the context of investigating information about a gang that trafficked genuine Greek passports to foreigners for 3,000-4,000 euros each, in order to facilitate their illegal exit from the country to countries in central and northern Europe, the existence of a structured criminal gang with ongoing criminal activity.

As it emerged from the research, the members of the organization had distinct roles and were charged with specific tasks as follows:

The 38-year-old was the ringleader of the crime group, which provided accommodation for members carrying the illegal travel documents and looked after the documents. He also made the contacts with the prospective clients for the sale of the documents, while going with another accomplice to currency transfer shops, leaving him to receive or deposit the required sums of money.

The 39-year-old and the 43-year-old were responsible for procuring the travel documents from other criminal networks operating in central and northern European countries and then transporting them to our country.

In a search carried out at the home of the team members, the following were found and confiscated: Nine original travel documents of the 1951 Convention, 44 original Greek residence permits, 3 identity cards of SCHENGEN states, 3 residence permits of SCHENGEN states, 2 asylum seeker cards of Greek authorities, 1 driver’s license and a 1 driver’s training card from the Romanian authorities and under the same information, 1 police ID card, money transfer documents, handwritten notes in Arabic, 850 euros, 4 mobile phones, 1 tablet. Some of the seized travel documents have been recorded as stolen or lost.

Those arrested were taken away to the criminal prosecutor of Athenswhile the investigation to verify the links with the criminal networks that supplied them with the travel documents continues.
