Facts

1709: Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk is rescued, after four years of being stranded on Fernandez Island. It will be the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s novel “Robinson Crusoe”.

1861:The first inter-club match in football history takes place. In Sheffield, England, Sheffield FC and Hallam FC face each other. Today both of these teams compete in the local amateur league.

1922: The Democratic Manifesto of Alexandros Papanastasi is published.

[1945:The Varkiza Agreement is signed, with which the EAM representatives accept that ELAS be dissolved and its fighters hand over their weapons to the legitimate government of Nikolaos Plastiras.

1950: The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), our well-known Eurovision, is founded.

2012: With 199 “yes” the new loan agreement (second memorandum) is voted in favor, against 74 MPs who vote against it and 5 who declare “present”. Twenty MPs from PASOK and the same number from New Democracy vote negatively. The LAOS MPs abstained, with the exception of Makis Voridis and Adonis Georgiadis, who voted positively. The MPs of KKE, SYRIZA and DIMAR vote against the new loan agreement.
