How a 34-year-old woman was deceived by losing 2,500 euros from her account, believing the words of love of a stranger
A 34-year-old woman from Rethymnon was a victim of online fraud and the reason was… love.
The woman met on a well-known dating app at internet a man who was introduced to her as a military man from America. He began to tell her love words and told her that he wants to meet her in person. She believed him and continued communication with him.
The so-called military man he told her that because he is on assignment outside of America he has no active account and no good access to the internet. At the same time, he pointed out to her that in order to come to Rethymno to see her and get to know each other, she should help him with his papers. In fact, an alleged associate of his from America would send a package to Rethymnon containing 65,000 euros inside as well as the necessary documents needed to legally come to Greece.
On this pretext, he asked the woman to enter to a shipping company link where he would pay to receive the parcel. The 34-year-old entered the link, entered her card details and codes and paid a significant amount. Afterwards, she found that this link had been locked while all her information was inside.
Four days then the 34-year-old realized that she had been the victim of a fraud, as a result of which she was taken to the police station and filed a complaint against the alleged American soldier. In fact, as he reported to the authorities, he had already lost around 2,500 euros
