A model recreation area was created with a modern playground and… a modern fountain
The area Karamanlakis in Kato Patisia with its characteristic homogenous preserved buildings, gains new life after the reconstruction of the historical Kalliga square (Karamanlakis) by the Municipality of Athens.
In the renovated space, extent of about 2 acres, a model playground was created following the persistent request of the residents, financed by Visa as part of the municipality’s “Adopt your city” program, as well as a beautiful fountain donated by a group of local residents.
The inauguration of the renovated square, which after the aesthetic and functional interventions, has been transformed into an attractive place for walking and recreation for the wider neighborhood, were carried out by the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, in the presence of all those who actively participated in the initiative.
“In this historic neighborhood where one still feels the pulse of post-war Athens alive, we are delivering a project of vital importance for the residents of Kato Patisia,” said the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, among others, who indicated that the municipality will continue to implement the 129 neighborhood projects “that significantly improve the daily life of Athenians”.
For the redevelopment of the area, the municipal authority took into account the proposals of the “Citizens’ Association of Kalliga Square”.
The area of the square was divided into two zones:
- The first zone is occupied by the area of the fenced playground, with modern play equipment, while a green space was created around the perimeter.
- In the second zone, the area of the square was designed, with functional benches and a beautiful fountain intended for cooling off, especially in the summer months.
Over the entire area of the square, the floor has been paved with cobblestones, while the pavement slabs – around the perimeter of the square – have been replaced by cobblestones, so that the unified character of the project can be distinguished.
Of exceptional importance was also input from a group of residents and visitors of the area, led by the architect Dimitris Sotiropoulos, participated in the reconstruction of the square with the donation of the fountain. It is a modern fountain that does not take up vital space on the square, while at the same time it allows it to be used in multiple ways (group games, organization of events, etc.)
