Anti-war messages, accuracy, energy crisis and people’s electronic communication through social media, this year’s carnival themes
The floats of the Municipality for the Patrinos Carnival 2023 are ready and “waiting” impatiently to pour out of the coming Friday February 24th in the main streets of Patras and to leave their unique imprint at the peak of the carnival fever on last three days of the carnival season.
The chariots, which every year he builds the Carnival Workshop of the Municipality of Patreon (responsible: Nikos Livanis) with the special artistic vision and the special know-how of its artist-builders, have their own important share in the pan-Hellenic reach of the institution and its universal acceptance and recognition in the consciousness of the whole country.
The tanks they combine magnificence, artistic quality and a satirical and often caustic dimensionresponding directly both to the messages and issues of current politics seen from a subversive and humorous angle and to the timelessness of the forms of the Patron Carnival, which have been linked to its long history.
The parades this year after a gap of three years they are returning to the first Carnival after the pandemic adventure and the floats will be in the streets in wheeling and carnival movement to take off the carnival thermometer. And of course on their evening outings illuminated.
Once again they will attract attention and admiration Friday 24 February at 19.00 at the float paradein their first appearance in public, which will enjoy them up close and be photographed with them, on Saturday 25 February at 18.00 at the night foot parade and on Sunday 26 February at 14.00 at the Grand Parade of the Patronus Carnival 2023.
The theme of this year’s floats of the Municipality is influenced by happy carnival themes but also by anti-war messages for peace, satirical themes about accuracy and the energy crisiswhile the comic references to the reality of people’s electronic communication through social networks but in the adventure of the pandemic.
This year’s King Carnival (design, construction: Nikos Livanis) is a clown, a juggler of the circus and laughter dominant and included in an artistic, intensely colorful composition with many figures, jugglers, carousels. A large amusement park that will attract attention with its movement.
The Herald of the Carnival King (design, construction: Nikos Livanis) is a small carnival music band with figures playing the musical instruments (drums, double bass, saxophone, etc.). The dominant figure of the usher is a drummer who keeps the beat and gives the impetus for the carnival fun and the endless merriment of the parades.
The float of the Queen of the Patrinos Carnival (design, construction: Nikos Livanis) is this year dedicated to Peace, the most coveted good of the world. A dove held by Irini dominates and from this will emerge this year’s Queen, Katerina-Veneri Siuli. Around buildings with graffiti on them written the word “Peace” in many languages of the planet. The construction around the perimeter includes female dancers who dance to the sounds of music and complete the composition.
The Flower chariot (design, construction: Nikos Livanis) which will receive the innumerable flowers that herald spring, in its construction is a coy fish whose origin goes back to and symbolizes Chinese mythology abundance, fertility and tranquility. A huge fan with two Chinese flowers dominates the back.
“Imagine” is the title of another chariot (design, construction: Nektarios Sarigiannis), borrowed from John Lennon’s Beatles song of the same name. With a clear reference to the band’s anti-war songs, the chariot evokes Peace by depicting the carefree hippie Lennon making a victory sign with one hand and holding a peace sign in the other as he vandalizes a tank spreading destruction and destruction.
The Hell Oil (design, construction: Nektarios Sarigiannis) is a paraphrase of the well-known “Shell Oil” and satirizes the surge in fuel precision that the energy crisis led to due to the war in Ukraine. From a pump with “horns of hell” that says “3.98 euros” (the price of a gas shot) come out hoses that transform into pistols, which point at a guy inside a car. On the pistols hang the flags of various countries of the world capital, which essentially mark Greece.
The Facebook (design, construction: Nektarios Sarigiannis) is a satirical chariot whose first concept was realized for the 2020 parades, however it was reconstructed and new elements were adapted to it creating almost a new chariot. The reality of our days and the dominance and illusory shine and refracted image of users through facebook creates fertile ground and occasion for a comic look and satirical spirit.
Finally the “Rabbit Test Show” (design, construction: Nektarios Sarigiannis), which was originally made during the pandemic period for previous Carnivals, has now been reconstructed and enriched creating a new image. The measures of the pandemic, the restrictions and all the protagonists of the sad years that have passed are treated with a comic vein and the well-known carnival dimension, parodying the word “rapid test” with the word “rabbit test».
At the same time, the floats of the Children’s Carnival 2023 that we saw last Sunday in the impressive Children’s Parade (“Iguana” and “Moon” by Nikos Livanis and “The Centipede” by Nektarios Sarigiannis reading her open book), will appear completing the sequence of carnival floats of the Municipality of Patreon. The floats will also be flanked by some older floats from the Little Carnival.
