A resolution of the Academy of Athens was issued by the Academy of Athens on the occasion of the death of Academician Georgios Dertilis
As it states in it, the Academy of Athens was informed with deep sadness of the death of Professor Georgios Dertilis, its regular member and leading scientist, and decided the following
1. To fly the flag of her Palace at half mast for three days
2. To place a laurel wreath on the body of the deceased
3. Academic Chryssa Maltazou to give a eulogy
4. To express condolences to his relatives
5. To publish this in the daily press.
He studied public law and economic sciences at the Athens Law School of the University of Athens and did postgraduate studies in Political Theory and History at the University of Sheffield.
Returning to Greece, in 1978, he was appointed a specialist scholar of economic history at the Athens Law School, of which he became vice-chancellor in 1980. Three years later, in 1983, he was elected full professor of Social and Economic History in the Political Science Department of the Athens Law School, from who retired in 2002 with the title of Professor Emeritus.
In 2000, he was elected professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, while he was a visiting professor at Harvard University, the European University Institute in Florence, the University of Oxford, etc. In 1989, he was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He was chairman of the board of directors of the historical archive of the University of Athens (1987-2002), of which he was the founder.
He was also secretary general of the board of directors of the National Bank Educational Foundation (1986-1991), regular member and director of research at the National Bank of Greece, member of the National Research Advisory Council, the National Research Foundation and the Schlumberger and Maison Suger Foundations (Paris) as well as president of the Hellenic Society of Economic History.
Twelve books and forty articles by G. Dertilis have been published or translated into Greek, English, French, Spanish and Italian. He was awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honor and had been granted French citizenship.
