Full of wild boar traps complain that there are many places in the Municipality of South Pelion, local residents and animal lovers.

A typical recent example, a kitten of a lady who lives in the area near Xinovrysi, who saw on Monday, her kitten hanging from a wild boar trap that was placed on a tree on the property.

Shocked, the woman tried to disentangle the animal. He took it to the vet, but was unable to save it.

Speaking to “Th”, he said that it is not the first time that animals, domestic and not only, get involved in such traps set by some to catch wild boars.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my cat hanging there. As far as I know such traps are forbidden to be placed. It was a hideous sight. In the past, dogs and cats have been caught in such traps, sometimes with a happy ending, other times unfortunately with a not so happy ending.”

The cat’s owner informed both the Police and the Pelion Strays Animal Welfare.

In his statements to “Th”, the president of Zoophilic Strays of Pelion, Mr. Nikos Kleftodimos, emphasized that “South Pelion is full of these traps that the lady’s unlucky cat was also caught in. With these traps, wild animals and foxes and badgers are caught, but also goats, dogs and cats. They are made of wire rope and their sale is prohibited. They place these traps in various places and on trees, mainly fig trees that wild boars approach to eat and are caught.”

He himself, as he mentioned, went to the Prosecutor’s Office yesterday, filed a lawsuit and informed the Prosecutor’s and Police Authorities about the incident, asking for their intervention.

“There are hundreds of traps in South Pelion. This mentality has to change” said Mr. Kleftodemos and continued “There are hunters who stand against these practices. They see these pitfalls and resent the mentality of some. The situation must change because it is dramatic in South Pelion. We ask that the Law be implemented and that those responsible for these traps be punished, according to what the legislation stipulates”.
