A water leak was enough to part of the false ceiling collapses in a dental clinic room in School of Dentistry of the Aristotle University of Thessalonikilast Sunday (20/2).

According to his publication GRtimes it all happened when a pipe allegedly detached from a radiator on the 4th floor of the school, causing the leak. The waters flooded the fourth, but also the third floor, thus “inflating” the ceiling of the second floor. As a result, part of the false ceiling of the second floor collapsed, causing slight material damage to the clinic facilities, while by pure luck no one was injured, as there are no classes that day.

How was the damage done?

The event was noticed by a graduate student who was at the School, as she was “running” an experiment. The student notified the president of the Dental School of AUTH, Theodoros Poulopoulos, who in turn notified the rector of the University, Nikos Papaioannou, as well as all the authorities. Everyone who was informed of the event rushed to the scene, with Mr. Poulopoulos explaining to GRTimes that the incident in question, fortunately, did not cause any injuries, as it happened on a day when health services are not provided to patients and of course, classes are not held.

This reason, however, was also the reason that made it difficult to prevent the collapse, as it was not possible to detect the damage in time.

According to the president of the School, similar incidents have been recorded in the past in the Dentistry building.

“The frames are 42 years old, just like the building that was erected in 1981. So we have to constantly check the facilities”, he notes in this regard, since if the frames were more modern, according to Mr. Poulopoulos, then damage like this would not occur of Sunday.

The clinic is closed for a day

The replacement of the worn slabs is going to take place in the next few days, as the director of the particular clinic told GRTimes, “we are waiting for the roof to come and for them to be covered (including the gaps left by the collapse of the slabs)”.

According to her, the damages were not significant, however they caused the school to be suspended for a day, as “the damages had to be cleaned and the water collected”.
