For the first time after decades, all 108 Bridges of Attica were checked for possible damage with funding from the Region of Attica, with a budget of around 350 thousand euros.

This control was deemed necessary, as many of the bridges have been built since 1960 without an assessment of their current condition. The findings of the completed inspections were used to identify the technical elements that need further investigation, through the performance of static adequacy and reinforcement studies.

In particular, the bridges are built in different time periods, with the oldest ones estimated to have been built in the 1960s.

The 108 technical projects include overpasses, underpasses, bridges that carry central road axes, such as the National Highway.

It is worth noting that since their construction there does not seem to have been any previous inspection or control.

A Register of Bridges is established

From the inspections carried out, the proposed repair, maintenance, instrumental monitoring works, as well as studies required for a more detailed inspection and verification of static adequacy, emerged.

In addition, on the occasion of the inspections carried out and the relevant recording of data, a Register of Bridges will be drawn up.

According to the findings of the inspections and the proposed actions that have been recorded, a preliminary study was drawn up regarding the preparation of all the required studies and on-site inspections, the maintenance – reconstruction of the bridges, their electric lighting, their instrumental monitoring and the upgrading of the safety level them, with a proposed budget of €89,900,000 (including VAT), which was submitted to the Ministry responsible for financing.

The project is proposed to be included in the “Development Program of Contracts of Strategic Importance”, which is a development tool of the modern staff state at the national, regional and local levels, as well as a pillar for the implementation of the annual unified government policy plan for productive restructuring and reconstruction and social cohesion.

At the same time, within the framework of the Program Agreement signed by “New Metropolitan Attica” with the Region of Attica and the Municipality of N. Philadelphia – Chalkidona, a study was prepared for the maintenance of the Vryoulon Bridge, which is located on the National Road and serves the crossing of traffic over the National Highway of Athens Lamia, at the height of N. Philadelphia.
