The role of exterior design in vehicle energy savings

by

Exterior design plays an important role in saving energy in a car. The more aerodynamic its shape, the lower the energy loss and fuel consumption. The aerodynamic coefficient (cd) plays an important role in electric cars, whose main concern is to maintain a high level of autonomy.

Analyzes have shown that about 70% -80% of the power of an engine on the highway (at speeds of 130-140 km / h) is consumed in the aerodynamic resistance, while almost all the remaining power in the rolling resistance. This is the main reason why most electric vehicles seek to have a low aerodynamic coefficient. The clean, sleek and smooth surfaces reflect the broad strategic design of EV exteriors by the automotive industry.

Only one aerodynamic wing set can reduce fuel efficiency on the highway by up to 5%. It is therefore necessary for designers to turn in this direction. The absence of mirrors also helps to reduce the resistance. So we will see in many electric cars instead of mirrors to use cameras that reflect the external environment on internal screens. Also, many electric cars hold their door handles inside the doors and the handles only come out when the driver and passengers need them to open them.

The small aerodynamic aids, especially in the rear of the car help in the better air flow, keeping it at the top. Although electric cars do not have an internal combustion engine, large amounts of heat are generated by the batteries. With the right aerodynamics and with the right air ducts and the right inclinations, the air flow is directed to the places that need cooling.

Although most electric cars today seem to have futuristic shapes, there is still a need for specially designed aspects, diffusers and ducts to supply cold air to the heat exchangers. They may not need large masks to achieve this, but small incisions with a specific design that also helps maintain aerodynamics.

What is certain is that design plays an important role. Today, electric models with a drag coefficient of 0.23 cd are released. Price that is very low compared to the older models. In terms of design, the bar has been raised even more and it is certain that we will see even lower traction values, showing that the mechanics and design of modern cars are constantly evolving, improving and changing in favor of reducing consumption and increasing the autonomy of electric vehicles.
