Thessaloniki: They cleaned an owl soaked in sewage- It could not fly

by

Immersed in sewage, unable to fly, was found about a month ago an owl in a rural area of Thessaloniki, which after a series of … baths made by members of the Action for Wildlife, flew again, clean and free, just before at New Year’s Eve.

In fact, because every year, at the premises of the Association, they welcome and clean dozens of birds that have been soiled by oil, grease or other substances, they seek, through funding from the internet (Crowdfunding), the creation of special infrastructure for the immediate response to such incidents.

“This eagle owl had its black crap when it was found, since it could hardly stand up. We had to bathe him more than 10 times, with special liquids, in order to completely clean his wings and to be able to reintegrate him shortly before the arrival of the new year “, explained to APE-MPE the president of the union Stavros Kalpakis.

As he mentioned, however, similar incidents are often accepted in the Action and that is why it is necessary to create new infrastructure and acquire appropriate equipment to make it easier and more effective to restore the health of seabirds, which have been soiled with various substances.

“Our goal is, through crowdfunding, to raise 30,000 euros to procure, among other things, a lanyard suitable for large and medium-sized birds and a water heater, to create a non-slip floor and drying area, as well as a health rehabilitation cage and rehab. ».

At the same time, according to Mr. Kalpakis, in the framework of the project, they seek the installation of an elevated tank for water collection, in order to fill the lakes of aquatic birds as, during the time of their hospitalization, the birds lose their waterproofing.

“It is necessary to gradually recover the waterproofing with a bath in order to be able to reintegrate them healthy,” he explained.

Wildlife Action cares for, hosts and reintegrates injured and sick wild birds, small mammals and reptiles. It accepts animals from Evros and Lemnos to the Ionian islands. In total, the Wildlife Action takes care of about 2000 animals per year.
