With a very bad news begins in 2022. A few months before AEK enters its new stadium, Stelios Serafeidis passed away, without having time to see his favorite team return to its “roots” in New Philadelphia.
The 86-year-old legendary goalkeeper was facing serious health problems, especially in recent months, but he was never absent from the “Union” side. He had just been discharged from “Health” in September and immediately went to the stadium to see AEK in the match against Lamia.

Who was it
He played in the position of goalkeeper. He was the younger brother of also international football player Lampi Serafeidis, with whom they coexisted in both Apollon Athens and AEK. He died on January 4, 2022 after a long battle with cancer.
It started with the Egaleo Children and then was for a year (1950-51) in Apollo, Athens. In 1951 at the age of 16 he joined AEK, following his older brother Lampis, where he remained for more than twenty years, until 1972, when he retired from active action, at the age of 37. He played in the yellow and black jersey in a total of more than 300 matches.
He was anointed once international with Greece, when he played on May 22, 1963 in the away friendly match against Poland.
After all, he served AEK throughout his career. From 1953 to 1972, counting 243 participations and winning three championships and an equal number of Greek Cups. Even after the end of his career he stayed close to the club, he was the goalkeeping coach for years until 1995, he continued in the club’s academies, while recently he played for the club’s indoor football team. He was also the president of the Association of Veteran Football Players of AEK.
His memory will remain forever. And PAE has already taken care of this by giving its name to the stadium of Spata (“Seraphidion”), while it is one of the four great figures of AEK that already adorns the new stadium of the team, together with Thomas Mavros, Mimi Papaioannou and Costa Nestoridis.
