Announcements about the measures related to the reopening of schools on January 10 were recently made by the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos and the professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Committee of Experts, Vana Papaevangelou.
According to Ms. Kerameos, the schools will open normally on Monday with intensification of controls and more tests.
In this context, he pointed out that in the first week of reopening of the schools, all students, vaccinated and unvaccinated, will undergo three tests instead of two, in order to identify those who are sick and asymptomatic.
From the second week there will be two self tests (or 3 if there is stock) and this measure will also apply to vaccinated teachers.
In addition, according to the Minister of Education, in case of a case in a department, we leave the logic of “the cross” in the tests and the controls are extended.
Thus, the unvaccinated students will be tested for 5 days every day, 2 rapid and 3 self, while the vaccinated students will take only the 3 self test.
Plevris: What changes in the issuance of disease certificates
The mutation is now dominant, as stated by the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris in today’s briefing of the Ministry of Health for the opening of schools, however the pressure on the National Health System is observed mainly in emergencies and simple beds.
In this context, he announced that an agreement has been reached with the Association of Greek Clinics, which will allocate 10% -15% of its beds for Covid cases, while there is already cooperation with private clinics in ICUs for non Covid cases.
At the same time, Mr. Plevris noted that “the increased cases oblige us to change the way the disease certificate is issued”. In this context, he stated that the vaccinated can be absent from work with a positive rapid test, while the unvaccinated workers should confirm the positive rapid test with PCR.
However, he clarified that in order to give sick leave by the employers, a positive rapid test is enough for all employees, vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Children are safer in schools, stressed Vana Papaevangelou
“Children are safer” at school, said Vana Papaevangelou, a professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a member of the Committee of Experts.
The expert explained that within the school community the necessary measures for the protection and safeguarding of children from the virus are observed and this fact makes the schools a safe place for them, which advocates their opening on January 10th.
According to the Ministry of Education, most cases were at the beginning of the school year, he added.
“It should be noted that we implemented one of the most intensive protocols internationally and this resulted in a significant spread of the virus in the school environment during the autumn,” said Ms. Papaevgelou, among others.
The millions of self-tests that were distributed free of charge proved to be life-saving as they found 84% of cases, even in asymptomatic children in schools, he added.
