The 62-year-old, “protagonist” of the unprecedented incident that occurred in Melissochori, was referred to the 5th regular investigator of Thessaloniki to apologize locked himself with his 2.5-year-old twin children in the car, opening a gas bottle with which he attempted to blow up the vehicle.

After being discharged from the 424 Military Hospital where he was treated, he was taken to the district attorney who charged him with two felonies and three misdemeanors.

More specifically, he is being prosecuted for attempted serial murder, attempted explosion resulting in danger to persons, continuous bodily harm to a spouse, threatening a spouse during marriage, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The defendant, a retired Air Force officer, he was given a deadline to apologize and remains in custody.

According to judicial sources, the 62-year-old has recently been in a dispute with his ex-wife. The latter had appealed to the Court by filing injunctions against him, citing verbal and physical violence against her.

Defendant subsequently filed for divorce, which was recently heard and a temporary decree was issued awarding custody of the minor twins (a boy and a girl) to the mother and regulating contact issues.

The incident happened last Sunday night and it was noticed by the ex-wife of the 62-year-old, who called the “Immediate Action” of EL.AS. A patrol car of the Soho Police Station immediately arrived at the scene and the crew members broke the windshield of the car, freeing the children and their father.

The timely intervention of the police prevented the worst, as the strong stench in the cabin of the vehicle had rendered the underage twins in a semi-conscious state. They were transported by EKAV ambulance to the “Ippokrateio” General Hospital, where they were treated out of danger. The preliminary investigation was carried out by the Life Crimes Department of the Thessaloniki Security.
