Former Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis passed away at the age of 97.
Born in Chios on June 12, 1928, Petros Molyviatis was a personality who was widely accepted by the political – and not only – world of the country.
He was a very close associate (“secret”) of the Prime Minister and President of the Republic Konstantinos Karamanlis, and had served as three -time Foreign Minister of Greece (2004–2006, 2012 and 2015), Director of the Prime Minister’s Political Bureau (1974–1980) Member of State of New Democracy (1996–2004).

He studied Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He pursued a career in the diplomatic corps, with the term of office, such as the permanent delegations of Greece at the UN headquarters in New York and NATO headquarters in Brussels, as well as at the Greek embassies of Moscow, Ankara and Pretoria.
From 1974 to 1980 he was Director General of the Political Bureau of Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis and then for two five years (1980–1985 and 1990–1995) he served as Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic.
From 1996 to 2004 he was elected Member of State with the support of the New Democracy, and in 2004, in the first government of Karamanlis, he took over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he remained until February 14, 2006.
He was also president of the “Konstantinos G. Karamanlis” Foundation.
On May 17, 2012, during the appointment of the Official Government of Panagiotis Pikrammenos by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took over until June 17, 2012.
Also, on August 28, 2015, during the appointment of the Basilica Government Thanos Christofilou by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs again took over until September 20, 2015.
He was married to Niovi Christakis and was the father of two children.
