Ford today revealed the new all-electric Explorer – a bold new electric vehicle that combines German engineering with striking American styling.
The Explorer is the first in a series of innovative new electric vehicles from Ford and is paving the way for a complete redefinition of the brand in Europe. The mid-size crossover can carry up to five people in two rows of seats and is fully equipped for family adventure travel.
Designed and built in Germany, the all-electric Explorer offers an exceptional digital experience, helping drivers and passengers stay connected and relaxed on the move. It features an oversized SYNC Move2 touch screen and a fully connected infotainment system with a custom audio system, wireless app integration and advanced driver assistance technologies.3
Designed for adventure travel and with approximately 470 liters of storage space in the five-seat configuration, Ford’s newest electric vehicle is ideal for exploring the city and beyond. The 17-litre console between the driver and front passenger can fit a 15-inch laptop, and combined with a hidden glove box and available luggage space with hands-free access, Ford’s all-electric Explorer sets new standards.
The futuristic exterior design is matched by an ultra-modern interior with high-quality materials and features, such as sculpted sports seats and a sophisticated sound bar, which is more common in revolutionary concept cars than in family vehicles. All this is combined with the possibility of rapid charging from 10 – 80% in just 25 minutes1 and access, by next year, to 500,000 charging points across Europe.
“Explorer is the pioneer of a new generation of exciting Ford electric vehicles. Inextricably linked to our American roots, but produced in Cologne for our European customers, it is ready for long adventure trips and fully equipped with everything they need for their daily commute,” said Martin Sander, general manager, Ford Model e , Europe.
Stylish, smart and ready for road-trips
The new all-electric Explorer is at the forefront of Ford’s electric push and is the company’s first mass-produced electric vehicle built at Ford’s new EV center in Cologne, Germany. Ford in Europe is committed to offering an all-electric passenger vehicle portfolio by 2030.
The aerodynamic exterior captures the spirit and dynamic styling of Ford’s iconic American SUV for a new electric era, also defined by a bold ‘shield’ design instead of the traditional grille.
Not only does the Explorer’s SYNC Move2 infotainment system keep passengers connected, it also features a movable 15-inch touchscreen that can smoothly move up and down depending on the driver’s needs and hides a hidden storage area for valuables. A space for two large smartphones comes standard with a wireless charger for 4 devices, while SYNC Move provides wireless compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. 5
Charging can be quick and easy, whether on the go or at home. Explorer can help you find the most convenient roadside refueling stops for you. Home charging can be programmed to use cheaper electricity where available to provide a fully charged battery, as well as a preheated cabin, for morning starts.
Available in rear- and all-wheel-drive versions, the Explorer offers a host of features that ensure drivers and passengers arrive at their destination as refreshed as when they started. Standard comfort-enhancing equipment includes heated front seats and steering wheel, a driver’s seat with a massage function, and climate control that allows the driver and front passenger to choose their own temperature. Accessing the interior of the electric crossover is simple with the standard keyless entry system and the available hands-free tailgate. This means that the vehicle’s owners can access the luggage compartment when carrying sports equipment by simply slipping their foot under the rear bumper.
Advanced driver assistance systems include, for the first time in a Ford vehicle in Europe, Assisted Lane Change 3 for smooth and safe lane changes at the push of a turn signal lever, as well as Clear Exit Assist 3 which warns of approaching cyclists before they turn the doors to busy city centers.
For the true adventure of life
Wanting to demonstrate the Explorer’s capabilities, Ford teamed up with young influencer and adventure travel enthusiast Lexie Alford – known to millions as Lexie Limitless and the youngest person to visit every country in the world – for a global mission with the new pure electric Explorer. Drawing inspiration from the first female explorer, Aloha Wanderwell, who set a record 100 years ago by circumnavigating the world in a Ford-sponsored Model T, Lexie will lead a new around-the-world expedition starting later this year.
Customers can also from today experience virtual test drives with the electric Explorer via their stationary or mobile electronic devices in a variety of fearless driving conditions.
Available in two high-end versions – Explorer and Explorer Premium – the new Explorer can be ordered from the end of this year, with an expected price of under €45,000. 6 Bookings are now open on Ford’s official websites across Europe. Learn more here: www.ford.gr/cars/electric-explorer
