A major incident has been declared since Sunday night in Dorset, south-west England, after oil spilled into the sea from facilities in the Perbeck region.

Perenco’s Wytch Farm is one of the largest onshore oil storage facilities in Europe.

It is estimated that by the time the leak was found and sealed, an amount equal to 200 barrels had been spilled into the sea, the composition of the liquid being 85% water and 15% oil.

Perenco, which bought the facility from BP in 2011, said there was “limited oil leakage”. He assured that the mobilization was immediate and that the leak was stopped and the stain was contained quickly. An investigation is being conducted into the causes of the leak.

However, local council chief Philip Broadhead said the oil managed to reach the surrounding sea area.

The UK Health Protection Agency has issued a warning to residents to avoid swimming in Poole harbor and the surrounding marine area. He emphasized that anyone who has come into contact with the oil should be washed immediately with soap and water and that in case of contact with the eyes with oil they should immediately be rinsed thoroughly.

Perenco said it is working with the relevant local authorities on the clean-up operation it has begun.
