With acquittal of of one of the two brothers from Bulgaria and sentenced to life imprisonment – as in the first instance – the trial in the second instance for the his cold blooded murder 46-year-old Greek-Australian businessman Yannis Makris outside his home in Voula on October 31, 2018. The Joint Jury of Appeal today found the 34-year-old, younger of the two brothers, who had been sentenced to life in the first instance as the shooter who shot the 46-year-old, guilty and acquitted him of four his older brother who had been convicted as an accomplice in the murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The judges, refusing to recognize mitigating circumstances on the 34-year-old, again imposed a life sentence for the murder and an additional sentence of 18 months in prison and a fine of 1,000 euros for the offenses of illegal carrying and use of weapons.
For the second defendant, the appellants overturned the first instance decision, deciding by majority that the 38-year-old should be acquitted due to doubts.
The two brothers are accused of coming from Haskovo, Bulgaria to execute a death contract, with an unknown principal, against the 46-year-old businessman husband of model Victoria Karydas. The 46-year-old Greek-Australian businessman had received bullets from a nine-barreled pistol when he left his house in Panorama Voulas. The attacker had opened fire on him and despite the victim’s attempt to escape, he did not stop until he gave him the free shot.
After the decision was issued, the advocate of the victim’s family, Yiannis Marakakis, stated: “We consider that this development has given the obvious. The man who was seen in the visual material murdering Yannis Makris turned out to be the first defendant. For Mrs. Karyda and his children, the question is still who sent the killers, who are the moral perpetrators”.
The businessman’s widow, Victoria Karyda, told reporters: “My husband will not be turned back by any decision. I want my husband.”
