The assessment that the Omicron mutation is a step towards the endemicity of the coronavirus was expressed by the curator A ‘Pulmonologist at Sotiria Hospital, George Cheilas, speaking to the main news bulletin of SKAI and Sia Kosioni.
“We are seeing a rapid, rapid increase in new diagnoses and infections. “At the moment we do not see a corresponding increase in the difficult outcomes, such as the hospitalizations, either in simple beds or in the ICUs, and the deaths”, he stated characteristically.
However, he noted that there is an increase in emergency attendance, which has tripled or quadrupled. “We will be able to have a better picture in 15-20 days, however I am very optimistic that the health system will withstand despite the problems it has,” said Mr. Cheilas.
As he explained, the number of new diagnoses does not cause “shock and awe”, as the majority of the population is vaccinated, a fact that is reflected in the hospitalizations.
“It seems that the Omicron mutation causes a need for treatment reduced by 70% compared to the Delta in both vaccinated and unvaccinated. However, the vaccinated person has little chance of being hospitalized. So, when we have 5,000 cases from Delta, we will have, for example, 100 hospitalizations. When we have 50,000 new diagnoses from Omicron we will have 100-150 hospitalizations again, because the population is vaccinated. “If the population was unvaccinated, we would have to have about 1,000 beds every day.”
In fact, he estimated that if we spend this month and the health system endures, little by little the pressure will de-escalate. “Because the vaccinations are going well, with the arrival of Spring, it will be a Spring for all societies,” he predicted.
However, Mr. Cheilas stressed that we should not constantly give time to the virus to mutate, because that risks the case of making an extreme mutation that may be less contagious, but much more pathogenic.
In this context, he called on all citizens who have not been vaccinated to rush to do so and those who have taken the third dose, to do the souvenir.
