“Rain” the fines fell on the owners of animals, mainly dogs in the area of Ilia
Administrative fines which exceed 255,000 euros only for the month of January 2023 have been imposed by the local Police Authorities of Ilia, for violations of the provisions of law 4830/2021 which defines matters for the protection of companion animals and ensuring their well-being.
It is typical that in 2022 the amount of the fines was 53,200 euros for the whole year. It’s about rapid increase of the order of 202,000 euros more, an amount recorded only in the first month of 2023 and which proves that the new framework for companion animals has on the one hand been tightened and on the other the offenses have been differentiated (depending on the offense
According to her data General Police Directorate of Western Greece Regionin the year 2022, 72 complaints involving 50 cases of violation of the law were submitted, 12 arrests were made and a total of 25 administrative fines of 53,200 euros were imposed.
On the other hand, in January 2023, 10 complaints were submitted concerning 4 cases of violation of the law, 1 arrest was made and 6 administrative fines of 255,400 euros were imposed.
Finally, for February 2023, 10 complaints were submitted concerning 8 cases of violation of the law for which there were no arrests and administrative fines.
What applies
The new framework for the well-being of companion animals is defined in the provisions of Law 4830/2021 and its purpose is “the protection of companion animals and ensuring their well-being, the strengthening of responsible ownership of companion animals, the establishment of a clear and coherent regulatory framework for the management of stray companion animals and a strategy to drastically reduce their number through adoption programs, with strict adherence to animal welfare rules.”
Violation of the above applicable legislation entails Criminal and Administrative sanctions, as the case may be, as defined in articles 34 (Criminal Sanctions) and 35 (Administrative Sanctions). The fines do not start from 100 euros (Failure to immediately clean the environment of the animal’s excrement) and reach up to 50 thousand euros depending on the violation.
