The fear that the National Health System may collapse as a result of the increased hospitalizations was expressed by the doctor of Molecular Biology at the University of Toronto, Giannis Prassas, speaking on SKAI and the show “Today”.
As he explained in Ontario, which was in a state of great pandemic, the hospitals suddenly filled up due to the prevalence of the Omicron mutation and are heading towards a record number of hospitalizations, while ICUs have doubled in recent days, although they remain absolutely low. He noted that those patients who have been admitted to the ICU with pneumonia are almost all unvaccinated or belong to vulnerable groups who have not had time to take the booster dose.
“Something similar is expected to happen in Greece. The wave of major infections will be followed by a major wave of hospitalizations. Greece is on a tightrope. “Obviously the hospitalizations continue to come more than the unvaccinated, however the attention of all of us is required”, he pointed out.
In fact, Mr. Prassas did not rule out the possibility of the Delta mutation recovering against Omicron. “We do not know if Delta from Omicron will be able to completely disappear everywhere and in what period of time, although it is a very probable scenario. “However, the scenario can not be ruled out that Delta will recover, because there is an immunologically long distance between the two variants and the immunity we are building for one may not be enough to erase the other variant,” he said.
At the same time, he predicted that the peak of cases in Greece will come earlier than expected, maybe next week, as the virus is evolving at a frantic pace, emphasizing that “I am afraid of a collapse of the health system.”
As the doctor of Molecular Biology said, we can not say that the Omicron variant is mild, but milder than the Delta. He warned that the treatments could take the form of the treatments we had with Delta, in case he finds immune systems weak.
In this context, he stressed that those who have completed their vaccination, are very well protected against Omicron and this is the legacy for the next day. “But because in Greece we still have unvaccinated and old tanks, the stakes remain serious,” he added.
Asked about the opening of the schools, he commented that it is a move with a very high risk, as a possible extension for a period of two weeks, would give the time to limit the broadcasts.
Finally, Mr. Prassas expressed the assessment that the Omicron mutation is the last act of the dangerous cycle, pointing out that pandemics end when health systems cease to be threatened with collapse.
