Constitutional order in Kazakhstan has been restored, President Kasim-Yomart Tokayev said hours after protesters were ousted from central Almaty Square after days of unrest.
Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry said in a separate press release that 26 “armed criminals” had been killed and more than 3,000 arrested, and that 18 police officers and members of the National Guard had been killed since the start of the protests.
Mr. Tokayev will address the nation today, state television reported.
Concern in the EU
The European Union (EU) is “deeply concerned” about the situation in Kazakhstan, and the deployment of foreign military aid is a reminder of “situations that must be avoided”, European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said today.
“Great concern over the situation in Kazakhstan. External military assistance is reminiscent of situations that must be avoided,” he said on his Twitter account, following the deployment of “peacekeeping forces” in Kazakhstan by Russia and its allies. Collective Security Treaty (CSTO).
