The first Early Intervention Unit for Psychosis in Greece was inaugurated today in Tripoli by the Deputy Minister of Health, Zoi Rapti.
It is a new pioneering and innovative unit, which is included in the structures implemented by the Ministry of Health after a tender, with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund GREECE 2.0.
The Early Psychosis Intervention Unit of Tripoli operates in collaboration with the AMKE “Xenios Zeus”. It is the first of a total of 8 similar units to be developed in the Territory, and offers free services to teenagers and young people living in the Peloponnese Region.
The new structure is aimed at teenagers and young adults who have either experienced their first psychotic episode or are suspected of having psychotic symptoms.
The services offered by the new unit are free of charge and are even provided at the patients’ home if necessary, with the aim of early detection and treatment of the symptoms of psychotic disorders in their initial stages, in order to minimize the long-term effects of their development, to prevent the chances of relapses, to improve the functionality of the patients and to facilitate their reintegration into the working, educational and social environment. For the early detection of new cases, the structure cooperates closely with the other mental health units, as well as with all public or non-public community bodies.
Services offered free of charge include the development of an individualized care plan for the individual and their carers, rehabilitation, medication and referral to another facility if required. Individual or group counseling and family counseling are also provided – training in social and individual skills and professional orientation, as well as participation in recreational and cultural events, in collaboration with community agencies and activities. The unit’s services are provided in a friendly outpatient environment, taking care to avoid the stigmatization of the beneficiaries. Also, the structure organizes information actions to combat social stigma and prejudices related to mental disorders.
The Psychosis Early Intervention Unit is staffed by 6 health professionals including 1 child psychiatrist, 1 psychologist, 1 occupational therapist, 1 social worker and the necessary administrative staff. The structure operates daily and the beneficiaries receive information about the project and the free services provided through the specialist therapists who inform the young people in the Peloponnese Region, by telephone at tel. 271 171 1710, visit/appointment on site, or by sending an email to address [email protected]
“In our country every year, at least 3000-3500 young people of adolescent and post-adolescent age manifest symptoms of psychosis, having previously experienced a highly stressful or traumatic event. To help them, today we are launching the first Psychosis Early Intervention Unit in the territory, here in Tripoli “, Deputy Minister of Health Zoi Rapti said during the opening ceremony.
