A boat with about 400 migrants is between Greece and Malta and is taking on water, the Alarm Phone support service reported on Sunday (9/4).

Alarm Phone reported on Twitter that it received a call from the vessel, which left Tobruk, Libya, overnight. He informed the authorities, but they had not yet launched a rescue operation.

Alarm Phone said the vessel is now in Malta’s search and rescue (SAR) area.

German NGO Sea-Watch International said on its Twitter account that it had found the vessel with two merchant vessels nearby, adding that Maltese authorities had instructed the vessels not to undertake a rescue and that one of them was simply asked to fuel it.

The Alarm Phone reported that people on board were panicking, with several of them in need of medical attention. The boat had run out of fuel and the lower deck was full of water, while the captain was gone and there was no one to steer the boat, they said.
