The Personal Data Protection Authority has received and is examining a complaint for a violation of personal data for the disclosure of information of the complainant in the case of SYRIZA MEP Alexis Georgoulis, in order to impose the prescribed sanctions.

The Authority, in its announcement, announced that it was the recipient of a complaint, which for obvious reasons, it is not revealed who submitted it, for a violation of personal data for the Georgoulis case.

The Authority clearly implies that it is already investigating the issue of who leaked the name and other details of the complainant, as it is known that the PASoK has directed accusations of the leak at the main opposition party.

Also, from the official announcement of the Authority, the Media are requested to withdraw immediately, any information related to the case in question, concerning personal data.

The announcement issued by the Personal Data Protection Authority:

“On the occasion of the continuous publication, from April 17, 2023, in electronic media of the name, photographs and other personal data of an employee of the European Commission, who had filed a complaint with the competent Belgian authorities for allegedly committing criminal acts by a member of the European Parliament, the Data Protection Authority, in the exercise of its powers, decided, following the submission of a relevant complaint, to initiate the procedure of examining any violation of the legislation on the protection of personal data as well as the issuance of temporary orders restricting the processing.

While reserving to examine the relevant complaint and overall the issues that arise, the Authority primarily calls on the media that have already published the relevant personal data to immediately review the legality of the processing in question, in accordance with the requirements of the legislation for the protection of personal data, and to take the necessary measures from home by checking whether the disclosure of the personal data of the complainant as an alleged victim of a criminal act appears necessary for the exercise of the right to freedom of expression and the right to information and information”.
