The 5.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 23:43 yesterday, Sunday, as the epicenter was located just 2 km from the main square of the city, to the “Simos Ioannidis” district, was particularly felt in the city of Florina.
In the call center of the Fire Department, small damages have been reported inside the apartments -mainly on the top floor of apartment buildings- while according to the mayor of Florina, Vassilis Giannakis, three balconies of apartments have been seriously damaged.
After the first earthquake, the inhabitants left their homes in squares and open spaces, while several strong aftershocks followed, focusing on the areas of Akrita and Ano Kleines, near the border with Northern Macedonia.
The deputy governor of Florina, Sotiris Vosdou, speaking to APE-MPE, stated that “so far no injuries have been reported”, while he was reassuring regarding the issue of material damage, saying that “there is nothing serious in the city of Florina”.
The mayor of Prespa, Panagiotis Paschalidis, noted that the earthquake was felt throughout the Prespa basin and that so far “no damage has been reported to houses or stables.”
Residents of Florina gathered in the squares, while some hurried to move their vehicles in open spaces even outside the city, in order to spend the night there.
The fire service of Florina, immediately after the earthquake was put on general alert.
