He passed away Sir Vasilios Markezinis. He suffered from dementia and breathed his last in Oxford, at the age of 79.

The news was announced by the professor emeritus of the medical school at King’s College London, Nikandros Bouras.

He was born in Athens in 1944 and is the son of the politician Spyros Markezini. He received his degree from the Law School of the University of Athens with a grade of 10 and his first doctorate with honors.

He was a tenured professor at the University of Texas and founder and director of the Institute of International Law at the University of Texas at Austin. He was a full Professor at the University of London where he founded and directed from 2001 to 2007 the Institute of World Law, as well as the University of Leiden (Netherlands) and the University of Oxford where he founded and directed from 1995 to 2001 the Institute of European and Comparative Law.

He has taught at twenty-five universities around the world, written thirty-three books and over one hundred and thirty legal articles, which have been published in legal journals around the world.

He was honored with the highest distinctions, such as the Brigadier of the Order of Honor from the Greek state (2000), the Grand Cross of the Order of Honor from Italy (2002). In 2005 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to international legal relations.

He was a member of the British Academy, a corresponding member of the French Academy and the Academy of Athens, a foreign Fellow of the Belgian, Dutch and Italian Academies (Academia dei Lincei), as well as of the A Since 1997 he holds the title of Honorary Counselor of the Queen of Great Britain (Queen’s Counsel), while since 2000 he is a Special Scientific Advisor to the First President of the French Court of Cassation (Cour de Cassation). Since 2007 he has been a Member of the Board of Directors of the “Alexandros S. Onassis” Charitable Foundation.
