The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis received in the afternoon at the Maximos Palace the Governor of Mount Athos Athanasios Martinos and representatives of the Holy Community, who are accompanying the icon of the Virgin Mary “Axion Esti” to Athens.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister discussed with Mr. Martinos and the Holy Primate Elder Christophoros Iberitis issues concerning the holy monasteries.
The Deputy Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikrammenos also took part in the meeting, from the side of the government.
It is noted that the transfer of the holy icon, which exits from Mount Athos only in special cases, it was an earlier request of Archbishop Hieronymos to brighten with her presence the 200th anniversary of the Revolution of 1821. However, due to the corona virus, her departure from the Athonian State was not possible at that time.
It is worth mentioning that the Virgin Mary “Axion Esti” is considered the most important relic of Mount Athos and is kept in the holy temple of Protatus, in Karyes, from where she has come out seven times for the popular pilgrimage of the faithful and today it’s the eighth.
