Its beekeepers are revolted Mountain Halkidikibut also the residents who live and work permanently in the Taxiarchis Forest, located in the municipality of Polygyros, because of a bear, which destroys the beehives of the producers.

According to information from GRTimes.gr and based on the information that has been collected, this particular bear “traveled” to the University Forest of Taxiarchis from Volvi, while the first information shows that it is a young and male bear.

In the last three days, damage has been reported to beehives in the village of Vrastama, in Taxiarchis and also in Vavdos.

“The bear definitely exists, but there may be more… We don’t know that. All relevant agencies have been mobilized for the incident. I believe that with everyone’s participation, there will be a solution to this particular issue. We don’t know how the bear got to our area” emphasizes on GRTimes.gr the president of the Municipal Community of Taxiarchi Halkidiki, Yiannis Xakis.

According to Mr. Xakis, the damage done is serious and the residents of the local communities are afraid, because they are not used to such situations.

The bear can travel up to 60 km in a day – its inexperience “sent” it here

The GRTimes.gr contacted the press representative of “Arktours”, Panos Stefanou, who emphasized that the bear is young and male, while – based on the indications that exist – the specific animal ended up in Mountain Halkidiki from the area of Volvi, which is located in Thessaloniki .

“They can cover up to 60 kilometers a day. It does not surprise us that it was found there, because we had reports of a bear’s course in places on the map where it seems to be heading towards Mountainous Halkidiki. It is a period of high mobility because they are in the breeding season, so they eat more and cover longer distances.” said the communication representative of “Arkturos”, Panos Stefanou.

In addition, he added that the bear’s inexperience in searching for food “sent” it to a place that cannot support such an animal. “There is no food available there and we believe it will go away on its own. However, for this reason the animal “beats” the bees and everything else it can eat. We hope that all this will end in a positive way and the animal will not suffer anything”.

No more bears in the area – Tips for beekeepers

Panos Stefanou it rules out the fact that there are other bears in the areabecause “the damages would be multiple and in more places”, while at the same time he proceeds with a strong recommendation to the residents and producers of the area.

“The recommendation made to the residents of the area is initially not to be afraid of a bear attack, because it is not an aggressive animal. As for the beekeepers, we suggest that they protect their bees either by placing a radio on the spot – in this way it will be easily discouraged, because it is young and not used to songs and voices – or by placing a special grid that makes noise and effectively keeps away. There is no need to panic and to remind that it is a strictly protected animal”.
