The 18-year-old’s vehicle was swept into an adjacent torrent that had formed at the time
A nightmare was experienced in the early hours of the morning by an 18-year-old probationary constable who serves at Chania airport.
It was 5.30am, as the bad weather hit the city, when the 18-year-old constable headed to the airport for duty.
As the father of the 18-year-old describes in Flashnews.gr, when his son tried to turn left, outside the airport area, in order to park his vehicle in a private parking lot, he was swept away by rainwater which in turn swept him away the vehicle into an adjacent stream that had formed at the time.
Having completely lost control, he was swept into his car by the rushing torrent with the muddy water almost up to his neck. Panicked and unable to do anything to save himself from the fury of the rushing waters, the 18-year-old only managed to call his father on the phone, telling him: “Dad I’m drowning, help”!
As the father told Flashnews.gr, “there was such noise and communication that I could not tell where he was. The water was almost up to my child’s neck».
The 18-year-old’s car drifted 300 meters away with an iron bridge to put an end to the uncontrolled course of the vehicle.
In order to save himself, he managed to climb onto the roof of the car, waiting for help.
The fact that with the occurrence of intense bad weather phenomena, such dangerous conditions were created and in fact in a place with very high traffic such as that of Chania airport, causes concern and sounds alarm bells in order to have interventions so that there is no next time that… by chance a citizen is saved.
