The city’s decommissioned airport will be transformed into Hellinikon Metropolitan Park and dotted with 21st century neighborhoods
“The Metropolitan Park of Hellinikon, we see it as a park for 1,000 years. When 80% of the space consisted of asphalt, soon it will be 80% green space”, says the chief designer of the Sasaki architectural office, Michael Grove, on the occasion of the distinction of the international architectural office that has undertaken the study and design of the Park Ellinikou, at the annual World Changing Ideas awards (design category) of the American magazine Fast Company.
As noted in the report of Fast Company, a fast-growing magazine with a readership of over 3 million, one of the world’s most remarkable urban renewal-transformations is now underway in Athens. The city’s decommissioned airport will be transformed into Hellinikon Metropolitan Park, designed by landscape architecture firm Sasaki and dotted with 21st-century neighborhoods, it also says, noting that it is the winner of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas 2023 award in the Urban Design category.
The report also points out that Elliniko will soon become the largest coastal public park in Europe, with more than 30 miles of walking paths and 10 miles of cycling routes, with 4 large playgrounds, an 18,000 capacity amphitheater and a huge beach that will all are accessible. The park will absorb more carbon emissions than it creates and will feature a natural landscape adapted to Athens’ weather conditions. The 45 award winners in each individual category were chosen by Fast Company editors and reporters and represent the kind of innovation and ingenuity needed to make the world more accessible, fair and sustainable for all.
As announced by Lamda Development, the internationally renowned architectural office Sasaki, which has designed and implemented some of the largest and most impressive urban parks around the world, in collaboration with the Greek office Doxiadis, sign the design and study of The Ellinikon Park.
In the last months, moreover, Hellinikon’s work, as it has been made public, has had a strong presence in important mass media in the major markets of Europe, America, the Middle East and Asia. Tributes to the uniqueness of the project, which will also contribute to the further development of Greece, have been hosted in more than 1,000 articles, including in media such as Sunday Times, Washington Post, Le Figaro, Forbes, Tatler, Conde Nast, CNN Travel, AD, Insider, Monocle. The international campaign will intensify in the coming years.
As Lamda Development has announced, The Ellinikon Park will be the first “smart” park in Greece, which will incorporate smart solutions for the safety of visitors and the preservation of the natural environment. The Ellinikon Park was designed based on the principles of sustainability and the biodiversity of Attica, with more than 1,000,000 new trees and plants enriching the existing vegetation, while through its innovative, modern infrastructure, its irrigation and electricity needs will be covered as a whole, fully offsetting its carbon footprint in its life cycle.
