solved, following investigations by the police officers of the Komotini Security Department, two incidents of telephone fraud against two women, in areas of Rodopi.

In particular, unknown persons called a woman and pretended that her daughter was injured and needed immediate attention surgery, they asked her to pay a sum of money, jewels and pounds to carry out the operation. The perpetrators managed to deceive the woman, persuading her to collect in a folder pounds and money and then to deposit them in a predetermined place in the city (garbage bin), where one of them went and collected them.

The same was arrested by the police while a case file was filed against him for the offenses of criminal organization and fraud. The case file includes four more people – accomplices of the arrested person who are wanted.

As, after all, it was established, the perpetrators using the same methodology defrauded another woman a few days ago in the settlement of Rodopi, extorting a sum of money from her. The pounds and a part of the amount as well as two mobile phones were found in the possession of the arrested person. He will be taken to the District Attorney of Rodopi, while the Komotini Security Department is conducting the preliminary investigation.

On the occasion of the above incidents, the police are addressing useful advice to citizens to avoid being deceived. Specifically, he calls them:

  • not to be easily persuaded by people who approach them as acquaintances of relatives – friends,
  • to be especially wary of unknown persons who attempt to enter their home under various pretexts and tricks,
  • to take care of their personal belongings, in order to avoid the possibility of their removal by the method of employment,
  • be especially wary when strangers try to convince them to pay a sum of money, under the pretext of an urgent need of a relative or friend (e.g. hospitalization);
  • not to give in to invitations to meet (appointment, etc.)
  • in cases where strangers invoke an emergency of a familiar-relative person, they should always seek to contact their known-relative by phone, to confirm what they invoke, with their own phone
  • declare that they are not going to hand over money if their acquaintances-relatives do not appear,
  • not to accept unknown persons to lead them to a Credit Shop or ATM to withdraw a sum of money,
  • not to be easily convinced in opportunistic purchases of products recommended to them by unknown persons,
  • not to be persuaded by strangers, who appear as employees of a Public Service or other body to fix a technical problem,
  • not to be convinced when strangers ask them to pay money for debts of acquaintances or relatives in public services or in shops-companies for the purchase of goods-offering services,
  • to try to retain the characteristics of the perpetrators, as well as the vehicles in which they move and
  • to inform the Police Authorities, even in case of attempted fraud.
