We discovered the four most special Mexican spots for authentic and delicious tacos
The truth is how to find good Mexican in Athens – let alone in the center – was not always an easy task. Tacos lovers had to wait for many years for the boom and spread of the fashion that is Mexican food today. And of course this was not necessarily a good thing at first, especially when some ventures were somewhat “Hellenized” – that is, not authentic.
But now, in our city, one can find many good Mexican spots, which know authentic tacos and have given their own touch to this cuisine. We singled out the four best, which are in fact located in the center of Athens, each in a different corner.
Poncho Tacos

In Karytsi Square is the colorful and tiny Poncho Tacos, where Poncho Alvarez prepares tacos with the authentic Mexican recipe every day. Everything is fresh and handmade – yes, even the tortillas. The options may be limited, but rest assured they are more than satisfying. The three “recipes” of tacos they serve are as follows: The cool Tacos el pastor (with pork marinated in traditional Mexican spices, fresh coriander, chopped onion and pineapple that steals the show), the very light Tacos Hongos (with mushrooms, spices and parsley) and the more upgraded Taco Hongos al Pastor (with mushrooms marinated in traditional Mexican spices, and cilantro, onion and pineapple slice). You can enjoy your tacos at the stands located outside Poncho, or by taking a walk in the very beautiful Karytsi square.
Mamacita
Mamacita is located on Apollonos Street in Syntagma, on the road to Plaka – it couldn’t be more central. Taqueria and Cocteleria, at Mamacita you will taste some of the tastiest tacos in Athens in many combinations, such as tacos camarones (with grilled shrimp), barbacoa (with beef cooked in beer), suavecito (with black beans, perfect for vegetarians) and of course the classics with chicken, pork and beef. You can also choose “Tacos del Sastre” and make your own tacos with any combination you like!
