The emotion was great at the commemorative event organized today by the Panpontian Federation of Greece, in Agia Sophia Square, in the center of Thessaloniki, for the anniversary of the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks.
The round of speeches was opened by the vice-president of the Pambodian Federation of Greece, Alexandros Efraimidis. He said, among other things:We are here to renew an oath of honor in their memory. We never forget. The genocidal aims to forget. If we forget we will be lost“.
The keynote speaker was the ambassador of Greece, Georgios Pukamisas. He said, among other things:The Pontus is there. We worship in memory of the dead. We commemorate the anniversary of the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus. We welcome any attempt by the state to negotiate with Turkey, if any, within the framework of International Law. The Hellenic Republic is a refuge and attraction for us. We will continue the fight for the international recognition of the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks“.
Immediately after, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia and Thrace, Stavros Kalafatis, took the stage. “Turkey has not yet recognized the crime. He must know that crimes against nations are not statute-barred and not forgotten. We hurt but we don’t forget”, he asserted and added that “we continue the struggle for international recognition of the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks“.
Dzickosta’s stern message to Turkey

K. Zervas: Naming of a street in the city after Genocide of Pontic Hellenism
Afterwards, the mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, referred to the importance of the international recognition of the Genocide of Pontic Hellenism.
Then, he stated that the municipality of Thessaloniki will soon proceed to name a street in the city Genocide Street of Pontic Hellenism. “It’s the least we can do,” he said.
The giant Greek flag, the laying of wreaths and… the kementzes
Earlier, members of Pontic clubs and associations, as well as ordinary citizens, laid wreaths and left a few flowers at the monument of Pontic Hellenism in Agia Sophia Square.
The attention was drawn to a huge Greek flag spread by citizens who attended the commemoration event for the 353,000 innocent souls who were massacred in Pontus.
In fact, several attendees took photos.
Towards the end of the event, the musicians, with a Pontic lyre, a dulcimer and a Pontic song by the singer Stathis Nicolaidis, sent the message that memory remains untarnished in time and no one forgets the Greeks of Pontus.
The event was attended by members of dance clubs of Thessaloniki, parliamentarians and local government officials.
Immediately after, a memorial march is expected to take place to the Turkish Consulate, where a resolution will be delivered.
