These “special port fees” will apply lump sums for each trip to China and not to any Chinese port on which the ship will be parked, and no more than five charges will be imposed a year, the ministry said.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Transport of China described Beijing’s decision “legitimate move to protect the legal rights and interests of Chinese shipping companies”.

“We call on the United States to correct their actions without delay and to end the irrational restrictions on the Chinese shipping industry,” he said.
