Spain: “Green light” in the fourth installment for the very vulnerable groups

by

Spain has given the green light to a fourth dose of the covid vaccine to people belonging to certain highly vulnerable groups, such as the immunocompromised, health officials said today amid a wave of the Omicron variant.

The decision concerns some cancer patients, transplant patients, hemodialysis or those undergoing treatment with immunosuppressive drugs, the Ministry of Health said, noting that this booster dose will be given five months after their third dose.

For the general population, the third dose of the vaccine will be available from the age of 18 and not at the age of 40, as is the case now, and this dose can be given five months after the last dose and not six months as previously planned.

With 90.5% of the population over the age of 12 fully vaccinated, Spain is one of the world leaders in vaccination.

Overall, 38.5% of children between the ages of 5 and 11 have also received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The country has recorded 7.7 million cases and counts 90,508 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
