The so-called “patriarch” of the local PASOK Christos Oikonomou, “Kitsos” as the people of Trikalini called him, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 88.

Among the founding members of PASOK, he was continuously elected as a member of parliament from 1977 until 2000, when he retired from active politics, choosing a role as a theoretician of the faction.

Among Andreas Papandreou’s close collaborators, he served as Deputy Minister of Health in 1987 and contributed the most to the organization of the NHS.

Psychiatrist and owner of a clinic in Trikala, with his wife Rena they had two children, Giorgos Oikonomou-, who will be sworn in on Sunday as a PASOK MP- married to Vasilka Merediti (daughter of former MP Soulas Merediti) and Vasia Oikonomou, wife of Michalis Derpanopoulos.

Until a month ago, he remained prosperous and commented on the political situation in the city’s hangouts, but his health has deteriorated rapidly in recent days.

He will be buried at 12 pm on Tuesday from the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos.
