The rescue operation of migrants from an islet in the Marasia region of Evros has been completed. Overall, the Greek authorities collected around 91 people, 32 men, 25 women and 34 children. According to information from SKAI, these are Yezidi Kurds.
According to an announcement by ELAS, were forwarded to Greek territory by a trafficker.
The migrants, who are in good health, were given clothes, food and first aid before being transferred to the Pre-Departure Detention Center for Foreigners (PROKEKA) of Orestiada.
The relevant ELAS announcement in detail:
“They were detected in the afternoon hours today (4-6-2023) by police officers of the Kyprinos Border Guard Department of the Orestiada Police Directorate, with the assistance of E.M.A.K. and in the presence of Frontex officials, -91- illegal immigrants, who were on an island in the bed of the river Evros, near the coastal area of ​​Marasia Orestiada.
“These are 32 men, 25 women and 34 minors, for whose identification there had been prior information from M.K.O. regarding the location where they were.
“From the subsequent investigations, the validity of the information was confirmed and coordinated actions were immediately carried out to rescue them, while a team of the Hellenic Red Cross was present at the scene in order to provide help in case of need.
“As it was established, the immigrants had been brought to Greek territory by a trafficker, who transported them from the opposite bank by boat and abandoned them on the island.
“The clothing, feeding and first aid needs of the rescued, who are in good health, were immediately met by the Greek authorities, while they will be transferred to the PROKEKA Orestiada for further procedures in accordance with the current legislation”.
