The last farewell to the honorary head of the Greek Armed Forces and former president of the EU military committee.general Michalis Costarakossay today, Tuesday, June 6, 2023, relatives, friends and military at Thessaloniki.
The funeral is held in an emotional atmosphere at the Holy Temple of God Sophia. Present were the Ministers of National Defence, Alcibiadis Stefanis, and Citizen Protection, Charalambos Lalousis, the head of GEETHA, Konstantinos Floros, the honorary head of GES, Fragos Fragoulis, representatives of the Armed Forces as well as the political and local government of the city.
The Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, Anthimos, and the Metropolitan of Stavroupoleos, Varnavas, preside over the exodus procession. Masses of the Army are in the courtyard of the Holy Temple, which has been flooded with wreaths, among them the one sent by the former Minister of Defense of Turkey, Hulusi Akar.
General Michalis Costarakos passed away last Friday at the age of 67. Recently he was hospitalized at the 424 Military Hospital in Thessaloniki, with a serious health problem.
Michail Costarakos was the head of the Greek Armed Forces from November 1, 2011 until September 15, 2015. From November 6, 2015 until November 6, 2018 he was the president of the Military Committee of the European Union. He had been awarded all the prescribed military medals and decorations of his rank.
