76% of Greek drivers talking on the phone and overall 84% use the smartphone while driving.

This was one of the most important facts highlighted by the 2023 Eurobarometer survey, confirming that in recent years Greeks are not only talking on the mobile phone, but even participating in videos on the go.

The survey was carried out by the Fondation VINCI Autoroutes and conducted by the Ipsos Institute among 12,400 people from 11 European countries. This even showed that 92% of Greek drivers consider other drivers to be dangerous, while while 8 out of 10 exceed the speed limit.

The use of bluetooth is widespread and its danger is underestimated as 58% of Greek drivers who use this technology.

9% of Greek drivers admit to driving drunk, while 15% have caused an accident due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Also, one in ten drivers has driven having smoked cannabis or used other drugs.

Regarding drowsiness while driving 26% of Greek drivers confirm that they have fallen asleep even for a few seconds at the wheel, while 2 out of 10 drivers have been involved or almost had an accident due to sleepiness.

On the other hand, Greek drivers are quick-tempered on Greek roads with 63% admitting to arguing with other drivers, 60% honking their horns unnecessarily, 24% getting out of the car to argue and 86% being scared by aggressive behavior other drivers.

Regarding speed limits, 8 out of 10 Greek drivers exceed the speed limit, while 44% do not wear a seat belt while driving. Finally, almost 6 out of 10 Greek drivers do not respect the safety distances and tend to hit the vehicle in front.

The findings of this year’s road safety Eurobarometer bring back critical issues of safe driving and highlight new risks, such as the steadily increasing use of electronic devices while driving.
